Pollarding is a practice of cutting the tree back to thick wood above head height leaving an overall general structure (often seen on street trees in Sheffield). Traditionally it was used as a form of harvesting wood in areas where livestock was present and re-growth from coppicing could not be done. Your trees may be an old pollard and require re-pollarding to maintain their health or you can newly pollard a large tree to gain a great deal of more light and less regular pruning required.
